Hi Mickey,
Just got home from New York last night and recieved the CD and tape for "12-String Guitar Drawings from the Acoustic Forest". The music on the CD is fantastic. My wife listened to the entire CD with me and it's simply incredible. That is the most relaxing music we've ever heard. It is also perfect for the DVD we're making.

I absolutely feel honored to be able to use this music on our DVD. It's adding so much class to the entire project and inspires me to make it better.
By the way, Mary wants to buy a copy when the final touches are done.

Thanks again,
Dan

Hi Mickey

I would love to have the tablature for this piece, from the sound sample on: page5477, it just sounds so good on the 12 string as played on your site.
I'm in Australia (Sydney) and although there are a lot of fingerpicking books and tutes, there is absolutely nothing on the 12 string for finger picking.

Greetings Tony,

That's surprising...I would have thought that the outback country would be perfect for 12-string guitar.

I have a Taylor 12 LKSM, I'm really only a novice at fingerpicking but I am learning to play some of Leo Kottke tunes, and John Fahey ones, your version of cripple creek just has that "country" feel about it, and the reason why I Love guitarists like Kottke, Fahey, and Lang. Although I live in the city I love the country, and have been to the US twice ( both times to Kentucky)

I can relate to exactly what you're saying...and I bet you also have the famous Takoma record/cd with all three players: Fahey/Kottke/Lang...there's a phenomenal version of "Cripple Creek" arranged by Kottke on this album.

If I can ask another question,? What gauge strings do you use on your 12 when playing that piece?

I use a light gauge set of strings...My Breedlove loses no power or punch from these...I believe some of the traditional 12-string players have used medium gauge...and they usually tune down their 12 string a whole step to lessen the the tension on the neck while adding even more bottom end.

I prefer using concert pitch for its brightness and projection.

Please stay in touch...and be sure to let me know how things progress for you...

Keep on Pickin', Mickey

Thank you so much for your quick and kind response.

Kind regards
Tony

Dear Sir/Madam

I recently Purchased Mickey Cochran's Crosspicking techniques book and I was wondering if the actual tab for "Cripple Creek" as played on your web site (page5477) on a 12 string guitar could be purchased anywhere, since the book only has the 6 string version (which seems very different) played on a different tuning.

Any reply would be appreciated.

Regards
Tony

Hi Tony,

Yes, these are two entirely different arrangements. However, the "Cripple Creek" on the new CD can be played and does have part of the arrangement, in crosspicking patterns. There are two other parts that require fingerpicking patterns too. I will try to write this piece out in tablature for you...and, maybe I can post it on our site as a free download. Thanks for tuning in with us...and let me know if I can ever personally assist you with your crosspicking efforts, Mickey

Thanks, Mickey!
I liked your story about hearing the turtle. I was born in Dothan, Alabama, (Ft. Rucker) and although we left there when I was in 4th grade, about 1968 (!!!) your story brought back fond memories of many hours spent in the woods, hanging out in my favorite magnolia tree when it was in bloom, all the creeks, berries and wild plumb trees, turkeys, quail... magic place for a kid...

Sure, I remember Dothan...to me, as obvious to you, this is Mark Twain country...thanks so much for tuning in...and, even more so, for relating.

Mickey

wow!

what a great way to wake up in the morning: a cup of espresso and your note with links!

thank you for your kind note and your mentions of me: it feels so very nice .... i will take you up on your offers, after some thought and more coffee ....

i love your 12-string sample there (page5477); it kicks my ass, sounds great, and i can't wait until my '72 guild 12-string is rebuilt, which should be soon .....Peter Kaukonen

Hey Peter...

Your response came timely...I appreciate that.

I've been working on many projects...probably spread too thin. My wife and myself have 5 businesses including Folk of the Wood.

Another business that I've had fun with is our publishing company: Wisdomofthewood.com...I've written a few books in my time...and have a couple with Mel Bay. Ultimately, putting out instructional DVD's with our own media studio has been very rewarding in many ways. If we were neighbors I'd be trying to talk you into putting out an instructional video...You're probably already aware of the many returns for this one-time effort.

Thanks for your too kind words regarding my "12-String Guitar Drawings from the Acoustic Forest". I also agree with you on Guild 12-Strings...I was recently looking for an early '70s F212-style Guild 12-string...funny, we also have bicycling in common...I love my mountain bike!

Well, that's all for now...be cool and keep on pickin', Mickey
