Flatpicking Guitar as Applied to 12-String Guitar

Although not as popular an approach as fingerstyle on the 12-String, flatpicking is quite effective. The 12-String is a powerhouse instrument to start, and someone that wields a solid flatpicking approach can produce some amazing sounds on the 12-String. Some exponents of this approach include Dan Crary, Glen Campbell, Joe Maphis, Roger McGuinn, Arlo Guthrie, Jimmy Page, David Bowie ... and some bands utilizing the flatpick as applied to 12-String include: Moody Blues, The Beatles, Crosby, Stills & Nash, America, Boston, Emerson, Lake & Palme and the Loving Spoonful ...

To hear a sampling of the 12-String Guitar played with a flatpick, be sure to listen to: "Loch Lavan Castle" on the following sampler page: "Drawings from the Acoustic Forest".

If you're considering approaching the 12-String with a flatpick, be sure to first lay a solid foundation through studies and exercises offered in general 6-string books and DVDs. Once you've laid a solid foundation, you might consider buying some CDs offered by the above artists so that you can better grasp the potential of the 12-String Guitar as played by a flatpick.
